Pilates
is an exercise system grounded in the principles of
anatomically correct movement and proper muscle recruitment.
Gentle enough for pregnant women; strong enough for
Olympic athletes, Pilates exercises build mobility,
flexibility and strength (by working muscles in proper
alignment to build core stability), while balancing
the body, mind and spirit.
WHAT
ARE THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF PILATES BASED BODY CONDITIONING?
Relaxation
is an important part of any Pilates Session as undue
tension can lead to injury as well as inhibit controlled
and accurate movement.
Concentration
is essential to the Pilates system and visualization
is used to help facilitate the required result.
Correct
Breathing helps to achieve the desired aims of the exercise
and stimulates full lung capacity.
Correct
Alignment, especially spinal alignment is integral to
the Pilates system, with emphasis placed on lengthening
the spine.
Stabilization
and Mobilization go hand in hand. As in most movement
techniques, stabilization of one part of the body is
essential in order to achieve mobilization in another,
without risk of injury.
What
Happens In A Pilates Session?
At
your first session you will be asked to give information
about yourself including brief details of any significant
medical history so that we may assess your particular
needs and special requirements. Using this information,
we will design an induction programmed to suit those
needs.
Pilates
is a non-aerobic system of exercise, increasing physical
fitness and strength through the isolation of muscle
groups and the slow gentle repetition of movements.
Most clients feel relaxed and refreshed at the end of
the a session, not exhausted and tired as is the case
with many exercise programs.
Exercises
are performed on specially designed equipment and sessions
last 1hour 30 minutes each. You will work on an individual
basis, under the close supervision of an instructor.
As you progress, your program will be adjusted to take
you through the varying levels of difficulty that Pilates
can offer.
FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS
Can
Anyone Do It?
Yes. Pilates is the ideal exercise method for anyone,
whether they be first time exercisers, sportspeople
or dancers. Although some of the concepts are easier
for adults to understand, Pilates is suitable for any
age.
I
have a Bad Back - Is it suitable for me?
Most back sufferers benefit greatly from Pilates and
in many instances pain disappears completely after relatively
few sessions. It may however be advisable to consult
your doctor before starting Pilates if you have a chronic
condition.
Can
Pilates assist recovery following an injury or operative
procedures?
Yes, The gentle nature of Pilates exercise makes it
the ideal choice for those wishing to re-gain fitness
following an injury or operation. Many surgeons, GPs,
osteopaths and physiotherapists have acknowledged the
benefits of Pilates and indeed, many such practitioners
are themselves devotees of the Pilates system.
I
am Pregnant - Will Pilates Be helpful to me?
Yes, both during and after pregnancy. During Pregnancy
it is important to increase overall muscle power to
assist with carrying additional weight. It is also important
to increase strength in order to avoid problems during
or after the pregnancy.
POST-
NATAL CARE concentrates on pelvic floor strengthening,
re-centering and re-balancing the muscle tone of the
body. It is, however, advisable to check with your gynecologist
before you embark on or return to any fitness program.
